Common Types of Flies
House Fly
The house fly (Musca domestica) is one of the most common types of flies found in homes and other buildings. These flies are typically gray in color and have four black stripes on their thorax. House flies are known for their ability to transmit diseases as they feed on decaying organic matter, garbage, and feces. They can pick up pathogens on their bodies and transfer them to food or surfaces, posing a risk to human health.
Fruit Fly
Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are small flies that are attracted to ripening or fermenting fruits and vegetables. They are often found in kitchens, grocery stores, and restaurants. Fruit flies have a tan or yellow body with red eyes and are known for their rapid breeding cycle. These flies can be a nuisance in homes and can contaminate food with bacteria and other pathogens.
Blow Fly
Blow flies (Calliphoridae) are a type of fly that is commonly found around decaying organic matter, such as dead animals or rotting food. These flies are known for their metallic blue or green coloration and their loud buzzing sound. Blow flies play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to break down organic matter, but they can also be a nuisance and a health hazard when they infest homes or businesses.
Cluster Fly
Cluster flies (Pollenia) are a type of fly that is often found in large numbers inside homes and other buildings in the fall and winter months. These flies are dark gray in color and are slightly larger than house flies. Cluster flies are attracted to warm, sheltered spaces where they can hibernate during the winter. While they are not known to transmit diseases, cluster flies can be a nuisance and difficult to control once they have infested a building.
